Sims Family Farms was recently featured on Channel 4 News (WCIV) as the family celebrated a remarkable milestone 150 years of farming across five generations in Dorchester County.
Based in Dorchester, South Carolina, the farm received the prestigious Century Farm Award, recognizing its long-standing contribution to South Carolina agriculture. The honor carries historic significance as the first African American family in the state to receive the award.
“We’ve been here in Dorchester County for 150 years,” said Jonathan Sims. “And for South Carolina, we’re the first African American family to receive the award.”
In addition to the Century Farm Award, the farm was recognized by the Dorchester County Council, Governor Henry McMaster, and U.S. Senator Tim Scott, highlighting generations of perseverance, leadership, and community impact.
Beyond traditional farming, Sims Family Farms also operates a vineyard and wine production, with plans to expand into tea production. The family proudly showcases Harleyville on its wine labels, honoring the community that shaped its roots.
The Sims family hopes this achievement inspires future generations to preserve land ownership, agricultural excellence, and generational legacy.
